We saw that care plans and assessments of risk did not always match. Some areas of risk were identified and there was no record of how to reduce the risk. On other occasions interventions were recorded that staff were unaware of.
People who used the service were encouraged to be involved in decisions about the service provision. Effective systems were in place to monitor the quality of service provision. People were encouraged to make independent decisions and staff were aware of legislation to protect people who lacked capacity when decisions were made in their best interests.

Magnolia House are also welcoming new residents into our home. We have a dedicated care team who provide 24-hour residential care in a relaxed, homely setting. We reviewed the information and data available to us about Dovetail House on 8 December 2022. We have not found evidence that we need to reassess the rating at this stage. We offer a wide selection of meals that are cooked and prepared using local fresh ingredients for all our service users.
Staff told us about activities that people enjoyed and shared their frustrations that these did not always take place. Staff told us how they worked extra hours and flexibly to try to ensure people got to enjoy planned activities. If you wish to see the evidence supporting our summary please read the full report. Quality monitoring systems were in place to monitor the some aspects of the service but some environmental auditing had not been carried out by the management team. We will minimize, reuse and reuse all materials wherever possible.
Care Quality Commission inspection rating
A variety of records relating to the management of the service, including policies and procedures were reviewed. We spoke with three people who used the service and two relatives about their experience of the care provided. We spoke with eight members of staff including the registered manager, compliance lead, deputy manager, senior care workers, care workers and the cook. SOFI is a way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk with us. We did not speak with people who used the service direct at this inspection.
People who used the service were protected from the risk of abuse and staff had a good understanding of their roles and responsibilities if they suspected abuse was happening. The unregistered manager shared information with the local authority when needed. Action was taken following any incidents to try and reduce the risks of incidents happening again. People received their medicines as prescribed and the management of medicines was safe. Prior to our inspection we reviewed all the information we had received from the provider.

Dovetail House is a three storey Victorian house, sympathetically converted to meet the needs of our service users.

We also encourage service users that are able to mobilise to eat out at the many restaurants and cafes in the surrounding area. All dietary requirements are catered for including vegetarian and non-gluten options. We offer a wide selection of meals that are cooked and prepared using local fresh ingredients for all our residents. We decorate the rooms to an individual service user's taste and there is plenty of space for them to place items they have brought with them.
For services we haven't rated we use ticks and crosses to show whether we've asked them to take further action or taken enforcement action against them. – the service is performing well and meeting our expectations. We saw staff communicated well with people, appropriate language, tone of voice and eye contact was used. We saw staff communicate with people in different ways demonstrating a person centred approach.

– there are some services which we can’t rate, while some might be under appeal from the provider. Suspended ratings are being reviewed by us and will be published soon. – the service is performing badly and we've taken enforcement action against the provider of the service. In this report the name of a registered manager appears who was not in post and not managing the regulatory activities at this location at the time of the inspection. Their name appears because they were still a Registered Manager on our register at the time. People were supported by sufficient numbers of staff with appropriate skills and experience.
Dovetail House is a care home for up to 20 men and women with an acquired brain injury or Huntingdon’s Disease. On the day of our inspection 13 people were using the service. The service is provided across two floors with a passenger lift connecting the floors. The Registered Provider must not provide nursing care under accommodation for persons who require nursing or personal care at Dovetail House. People’s need’s and choices were assessed on admission and were met by staff who had been appropriately trained. People’s eating and drinking requirements were met and they were assisted to access appropriate healthcare.
We found at this inspection that the required improvements had been made. We spoke with staff on duty who told us that there was not enough staff on duty to meet people’s care and support needs effectively or consistently. We saw records that reflected people were entitled to one to one support.
We also spoke with the newly appointed manager and the person responsible for overseeing the management of the home . Staffing levels were sufficient to support people’s holistic needs and they received care and support when it was required. People’s nutritional needs were well managed and people received the support they required. There was good collaboration between the staff and health professionals to ensure people’s health needs were met.

If we receive any concerning information we may inspect sooner. People were cared for by friendly and respectful staff who encouraged independence and listened to people’s choices. We carried out a review of the data available to us about Dovetail House on 8 December 2022. We have not found evidence that we need to carry out an inspection or reassess our rating at this stage. People and their relative told us they felt safe at the home. One person told us, "100% safe, they are lovely here, I have no concerns" and another relative told us, "My is very safe, I've never known any different.
